The Custom Build Experience
Every piece at Heirlooms and Honeydos begins with a conversation. We believe that a truly custom piece should reflect your personal style and stand the test of time. Here is how we bring your vision to life.
Our Process
- Consultation: We discuss your needs, the intended space, and your aesthetic preferences.
- Design & Selection: We select the specific slabs or timber and decide on details like joinery, edges, and leg styles.
- The Build: Each piece is crafted with precision, utilizing both traditional joinery and modern technology to ensure a perfect fit and finish.
- Delivery & Installation: Your heirloom is finished, protected, and delivered to its permanent home.
Key Considerations for Your Project
To help us create the perfect piece, consider these essential elements:
1. Wood Species & Character
The choice of wood defines the look and longevity of your piece.
- Species & Color: Do you prefer the warm, reddish tones of Cherry, the classic strength of White Oak, or the deep, dark complexity of Walnut? We also work with figured woods like Masur Birch or exotics like Bubinga for a truly unique statement.
- Hardness: We consider the "Janka rating" based on how you will use the piece. A high-traffic dining table benefits from a harder wood than a decorative wall shelf.
- Live Edge vs. Dimensional: Would you like the natural, organic "live" edge of the tree, or a clean, straight-lined dimensional cut?
2. Environment: Indoor or Outdoor
The location of the piece dictates the materials and joinery used.
- Indoor: Focuses on stability and refined finishes.
- Outdoor: Requires specific species (like Teak or White Oak) and finishes that can withstand UV rays and moisture.
3. Dimensions & Scale
- Thickness: A standard table top is often 1" to 1.5" thick, but we can create substantial 2" to 3" tops for a more "heavy" or "river" style aesthetic.
- Footprint: Consider the clearance around the piece. For dining tables, we recommend at least 36 inches of space from the table edge to the nearest wall or furniture.
4. Legs & Foundation
The base of the table acts as the anchor for the design.
- Wood Bases: Trestles, four-post legs, or traditional tusk-tenon joinery for a timeless look.
- Metal Bases: Steel U-legs, X-frames, or hairpins for a more industrial or modern contrast.
5. The Finish & Edge Detail
The "feel" of a table is often determined by its edges and surface protection.
- Edge Profiles: Options include a soft "roundover," a modern "chamfer" (beveled), or a "square" edge for a minimalist look.
- Finish: We offer a variety of finishes, from low-sheen hardwax oils that keep the natural feel of the wood, to high-durability film finishes for high-moisture areas.
6. Upkeep & Longevity
A well-made piece is an investment. We provide specific care instructions for every commission, but generally:
- Daily Care: Dusting with a soft cloth and occasional cleaning with a damp (not wet) microfiber towel.
- Long-term: Depending on the finish, a simple "buff and recoat" every few years can keep the wood looking as vibrant as the day it was delivered.
