Teaching and Project Support

Teaching woodworking is, for me, an extension of the same philosophy that guides my furniture making: the belief that mastery comes through deliberate practice, curiosity, and a willingness to embrace the learning process itself. Drawing on concepts from The Art of Learning, I believe that the most transformative teaching happens when students move beyond pursuing perfection and instead develop a genuine appreciation for the craft's fundamentals. I focus on helping learners understand not just the "how" of woodworking, but the "why"—the underlying principles that govern wood movement, joinery, and design. By grounding students in these essentials and encouraging them to develop their own intuition about materials and techniques, I help them build confidence and creativity rather than mere technical competence. This approach transforms woodworking from a series of intimidating tasks into an accessible, deeply rewarding journey of discovery.

Beyond the technical skills, I'm passionate about rekindling what many have lost in our modern, disposable culture: the profound joy of creating something with your own hands that will endure. There's a unique satisfaction in standing back from a piece you've built and knowing that through your effort, creativity, and care, you've made something that might be cherished for generations. Whether working with beginners taking their first steps or intermediate craftspeople refining their skills, I aim to cultivate this sense of meaning and connection to the craft. Teaching, like making heirlooms, is about investing in people and their experiences—helping them discover their capacity to create beauty and utility in the world, and showing them that the learning process itself is as valuable as the finished piece.
